Welcome to the Sand Creek Elementary Website! We are so excited to start the new school year and we look forward to the work we will be doing together through our parent-student-staff commitment. As a school, we have made gains in many areas over the past four years. We are a professional learning community and as a staff we collaborate and work together for the success of all students. We have a strong Parent/Teacher/Community Organization that has raised funds to help provide technology for all of our classrooms as well as provided many opportunities for our students and families outside of the school day. Some of these activities include Skate City Nights, support at Family Nights, Kid Power, the holiday gift shop, and much more!
This year, we will be “Raising the Bar” for all of our stakeholders—staff, students, and parents. What does this mean? This means that we want to make sure that every child who leaves Sand Creek in fifth grade is well prepared for the next level and is planning to go to college when he/she graduates from high school. This will take much work on the part of all of us! We have the following key actions for the 2011-12 school year to help us reach our goals:
SAND CREEK KEY ACTIONS
1. Create a college-going culture
2. Strengthen curriculum alignment
3. Monitor the academic progress of students in the Core Content areas (reading, writing & math)
4. First Good Instruction
5. Increase the participation and quality of parent involvement
We will also be asking every parent to sign a Parent-Student-Staff Contract that outlines the expectations for each of us as we support our children to reach high achievement levels. We will be asking parents to do three main things.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Support your child with homework by providing a distraction free environment and signing nightly for homework completed!
2. Ensuring your child reads 5 nights a week! (K-2 for 20 minutes and 3-5 for 30 minutes)
3. Ensure your child arrives to school on time and stays at school until the end of the day every day!
In return, we as a staff will commit to supporting students in these areas.
STAFF RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Providing high quality curriculum and effective instruction to enable all students to meet the State’s academic achievement standards and guided practice on skills prior to sending homework.
2. Providing effective reading instruction and ensure all students have access to developmentally appropriate reading material.
3. Begin effective instruction at 8:05am.
Please know that we want every child to be prepared for college and we need to work together to ensure that happens! Join us at Sand Creek Elementary and Harrison District 2 in our Destination 2016 Plan where we INNOVATE—EDUCATE—GRADUATE!
